Propagation Box

I was talking with Galin yesterday during the seed swap and the conversation turned to how we start seed.  After telling him about our low cost  propagation box he asked me if I would share it.  Our setup is in our home made greenhouse and it consist of a single sliding glass door that we have mounted to a wooden box creating a cold frame.  This box is lined with scraps of aluminum backed insulaton and the bottom has alot of drain holes in it. Everything to this point was collected for…

Seed Swap

Thank you Aubree for hosting the Well fed Neighbor Seed Swap yesterday at the Library Center.  My wife, Carolyn, and I had a good time meeting with so many people we had not yet met in person.  While the swap was not attended by as many as we had hoped, we did get some nice seed and Carolyn was particulary excited by the Jeruslim Artichoke we got from Lincoln.  We were also able to share some of our seeds and we hope that they work well for everyone that we traded with.  Hope we can do…

How Small is To Small

I got into a conversation with another member of this forum the other day about what makes a Farmer.  I say that anyone that sells crops or animals for profit on any size plot of land could call  themselfs a farmer.  Its my contentions that the Devers Family in Calif that feed themselfs and sell $20,000 worth of produce  on 1/3 of an acre are Farmers for sure.  My friend says no you need many acers of land and part time raising of crops or animals for sale would not make you a farmer. He says… Continue

Come to the woodworking dark side, Bill.

No dust mask, no earplugs, no safety glasses. I can hear music as the shavings pile up.

Thanks Bill. The rain yesterday was music to my ears, and I am hopeful to see my beans popping up soon. I was able to keep 5 of my 10 tomato plants gratefully, my favorite heirloom, Brandywine survived. I am hopeful since I planted them late, that I will have at least some salsa to can. In my family, the supply usually only holds out until Christmas anyway!!There's got to be some cooler sunny days ahead and fall crops to plant!! Yay!!

spent a long time in my garden today, taking back the straw and raking and aerating around the plants(the ones that haven't died!) planted some more bush beans and watered and dressed the rows with organic fertilizer/enricher.  This is  a new spot and has never been farmed before, so I have a long way to go !! At least the weather was nice today until about noon, so I feel I made headway!!

Love hearing about your garden. My Clyde's garden planner says start peppers indoors today for our region. I'm going to give it a shot.
