Victory Garden March 21st Update: What do you mean it's Spring?

We are such odd creatures we humans. According to our calendars and various media outlets yesterday was the first day of spring. Apparently Mother Nature has an agenda all her own. Who knew?!! I posted late this month as I don't have much in the way of progress in the garden. My seed starts are turning into cute little cole crop plants. I recently received my Richter’s Herb Catalog and have highlighted my many choices of plants and seeds to purchase. Next Saturday morning my friends and I will…See More

How Long Till My Seeds Germinate!

SEED GERMINATION SOIL TEMPERATURES Presented by HEIRLOOM SEEDSIn general, it is better to sow your seeds a little late rather than too early. If the soil temperature is not warm enough for the variety of seed you are sowing, the seed will often rot in the ground before it has a chance to germinate. This is especially true with seeds that have not been treated with a chemical fungicide. ( We do not recommend using treated seeds).Remember - the temperatures listed below are for the soil, not the…See More

February Victory Garden Update

Posted on February 14, 2010 at 1:00am — 2 Comments

2010 Victory Garden

It is a brand new year and already I have a new addiction, obsession, weakness. I can’t seem to shake it…Victory Gardens. There, I said it. I know it is really quite shocking. I’ve grown vegetables before. 2007 was the year of the tomato. I made wonderful spaghetti sauce that year. Family, friends and neighbors may remember 2008 as the year they were accosted with bags of long green lovely zucchini. Come to think of it…they were a little bit skittish around me until the Fall weather set in.… Continue

Hello Garden Goddess! Yikes! 7.5 inches here and no way out to or out of the drive. I was bringing a new Master Gardener from this area, but she has also decided this is not the day to try to come into Springfield with questionable parking lots, etc. It might get better later but had to make the decision now... Hate to miss Christine's presentation, but perhaps we will be able to catch this lecture at another time. Mimi
