This morning I was thinking…
The Well Fed Neighbor Alliance, LTD, and in particular Galen Chadwick and Aubree Taylor, are honored that the State of Missouri has named it's Garden Challenge the "10,000 Gardens Challenge" following the incredible success of the 1000 Gardens Project in Springfield. Way to go Galen and Aubree! Read below and become involved. Missouri first!
AgriMissouri is challenging Missourians to start growing! Our goal is to register 10,000 gardens from around the Show Me State, on…

Yesterday I was asked why i don't speak much about farmers markets. I don't because they exist. Farmers Markets, Community Sponsored Agriculture (CSAs), and other models are already on the ground here and growing in number and sales yearly. I love to go to FMs personally.
However, Missouri can only produce about 5% of the food necessary to support its population. Add that to the facts that,…

If you have decided that our future, as a global partner, is not bright, do something about it. Don't rail at the government and your elected officials. That is nothing but distraction. Only WE can change our life on the ground in our home. Only a vibrant, sustainable economic engine will do what legislation has failed to do for the last 60 years. How do we do that? We grow local. We buy local. We eat Local. Locally grown/raised food is our…

I enjoy every day now. Rich, poor, sick, healthy, runners, watchers, geeks, techno peasants, black, white, yellow, brown, red, martian, we all eat and food IS the common thread. Not only is the pursuit of Local food an "all good" cause with regards to food security, local economy, jobs, health and the ultimate sustainability of our children and their children to come, but it is the topic that draws us together. I see it in every meeting. As i look…

I’m turning the TV off. Nothing new on the Sunday morning shows. Do I mean new in the last year? Two years? Nope. I mean new since Nixon…. Possibly even before. Since then we have been globalizing. With every step in that direction, furthered by every consecutive administration, we have diminished our local economies ( and in turn the US economy) , we have diminished our health and…

Thanks to Donna (WFNA) and Mike from Colorado Springs, we have two great things to report.... Read both!
They are due, in no small part, to the emphais on and demand of local food! If you want to KNOW YOUR FOOD, it must be local. If…

Today Donna Kennedy Spangler, Galen, myself and Russ Kremer are off to meet with food shed producers, west of Springfield, to the Kansas border. We are meeting with the Amish in most instances. They are hard working self sustaining people and will be at the forefront of our move to re-establish locally…

I have to prepare for the get together on the 15th but i wanted you to see a front page story in the NY Times. It shows Roundup resistant weeds flourish in Missouri, Ark, and Kansas. Read this story. We've always said that mother nature will find a way. Here is comes. Follow the link. Thank you to my Daredevil friend Bill Jones for sending it to me.…

Let me show just how wide-reaching the “local food” buy-in is:
When I speak to environmentalists I talk of how our food was part of a sustainable ecosystem that we have long…

I haven’t got but a minute but I wanted to tell you about a couple of exciting things. Soon, even in advance of the feasibility assessment for a Well-Fed Neighbor Farmers’ Coop, we may very well have product in local stores and institutions. Nothing is set in stone yet, but our labels and our “seal of assurance” is submitted to the USDA and FDA for approval and we have producers anxious to use them….…

As I write I’m getting ready to go to Branson to play with the Daredevils. I know I’ll see some of you there and I look forward to a great day! Now, yesterday, Joe Maxwell, Galen, Donna, and I met with the Springfield Public School System, two locally owned Wholesalers ( Packers Distributing and Springfield Grocers) and more producers. Everyone sees the need, is hearing the message and looking…

For the last few weeks we have been meeting with producers, processors, wholesalers, restaurant owners, independent supermarkets and institutions in an attempt, under the experienced direction of Joe Maxwell and Russ Kremer, to assess the business viability of a local food, local product coop . Today those meeting continue. I can tell you that our message is resonating . Everyone…

A big thank you to Sandy Clark for telling it like it is in the Springfield News Leader today! The Well-Fed Neighbor Alliance is extremely proud of its appeal to all. It’s easy when you realize that government has nothing for us. Politics is nothing but distraction. So, instead of arguing back and forth, left vs. right, liberal vs. conservative, let’s talk about something real!…

I didn’t blog today because I’ve got a lot of docs to get done by Thursday for the WFNA, LTD 501c submission. Not fun stuff but , thanks to Connie Chadwick and Joe Maxwell, we are making real, affordable progress. Now, I just want to thank all of you Well-Fed Neighbors! Our goal of taking a social site and turning it inward instead of outward is working and growing in membership at an increasing rate daily. We are 7 members short of 700! I suspect by this time tomorrow…

If we are to move back to a more sustainable, more locally driven economy and food system it will be because we demanded it. I don’t have long this morning as I’m working on several documents for the 501c and the coop assessment. Ironically, the most powerful thing I can say to you doesn’t take long. Demand is the key. In every business, in every restaurant, in every hospital, in every school, Demand is the key. You must say the words……

The time for talk has passed. We are currently assessing the need for a local cooperative that would funnel fresh, naturally grown, naturally ripened, naturally raised food into our city. It is this simple. If we verify the need, and I think we will; if we put our locally produced food into our homes, our schools, our hospitals, and our businesses, we will IMMEDIATELY pump hundreds of…
