Michelle, What is up? You're all about taking on our nations health problems. Yet, over the last 3 weeks the Obama administration approved three new biotech crops. I hope I'm wrong but there are lots of indications that the GMO industry will be the next Big Tobacco. There is so much money being made and set to be made by patenting and owning the worlds seeds that all the indications of serious health risks are being swept away. While most of Europe required labeling of GMOs which effectively meant that European consumers could make a choice. In making that choice they said no to GMO. Much to the consternation of the American Ambassador to France, as the recent Wikileaks made embarrassingly transparent.
Why is our government so enthusiastic to push this technology on other countries? This is a question worth asking. After all there are no consumer benefits to Genetically Modified Organisms. The only benefit is to the company that holds the patent, so why would an informed consumer buy it? They wouldn't. And that is why in this country there has been so much lobbying money spent to keep GMO OFF of food labels. In my opinion the FDA is breaking the law. If a product is different enough to be patented, creating an organism that has never existed on earth, then it is different enough to be labeled.
This is from Food Democracy Now:
Roundup Ready genetically modified (GMO) alfalfa, Roundup Ready genetically modified (GMO) sugar beets and a new industrial biotech corn for ethanol production all received Obama's approval which will allow them to be planted as early as this spring. This despite acknowledgment that these crops are certain to contaminate both conventional and organic farmers non-GMO crops. Only last Friday, the USDA's approval of the new industrial biotech corn for ethanol production occurred despite massive outcry from major food companies who know that it will contaminate and possibly ruin the food they sell to you everyday.
These decisions are a devastating blow to our democracy and the basic rights of farmers to choose how they want to grow food on their land and the rights of consumers who increasingly choose organic and sustainably grown food for its positive health and environmental impacts.
Get involved now. Imagine if the BP oil leak in the gulf leaked a kind of self propagating oil that could never be cleaned up. The modified genes that Monsanto is leaking into our environment purely for their profit is a spill that can never be cleaned up. We don't have the technology to do so. Put it back in the lab until we learn how to undo any unintended and irreversible consequences.
Sign a petition telling Obama it is time to stand up to Monsanto and the biotech industry now.
And Michelle, no matter what hubby says, keep this stuff out of your garden and away from your kids until it's proven safe. And if you can come up with an experiment to prove its safety that doesn't involve feeding it to every American, that would be great too. Thanks.
